Explorer operation (2002-03-03)

Going ice fishing.

Another good day for hovering, allthough being the last day of my weeks holiday. Plan was to do quite a bit of hovering but weather not allowing and other things being more important this was the second and last hovering during my short vacation.

Few centigrades below freezing point a light breeze and a sun shine. This time it was going to be me and Mrs. we left our 5week old daughter to my parents for couple of hours and this was going to be a short break for us from babysitting.

The usual drill when we got to the hoverport: cleaning, dressing up warmly and so on. Maybe i should put on a large tarp and cleaning the snow would be easier....

Now we had almost 10cm (4") of powder snow and i was again of afraid that this stuff will mess the electronics as we go along. But to my surpise that didn't happen.

Instead for the first time i experinced lift fan  belts slipping. Quite a strange, since usually it's the thrust prop belt that slips, but not this time. They are a bit loose though and have to tighten them in near future. By dropping rpm's quickly and then increasing them slowly i could keep the lift on.

We just drove to the bay, to a spot where someone had already drilled holes (that's me being lazy - i'll admit, but you drill through 80cm (2,5ft) of ice!). We were not after fish, just a relaxing moment in a sunny weather. Actually Jaana, my wife, got tired of fishing rather quickly and decided to take nap in the rear seat of Explorer.

We didn't catch any fish - no surpise there. But the weather alone was worth of spending couple of hours outdoors. I guess we could have taken Jenni Kristiina (had a christening party yesterday) with us, but since she was in good hands why take any chances.

It was getting time to feed our baby so we headed back to hoverport. Before leaving hoverport we loaded some firewood into snowmobile sled and left to unload the cargo.
