Explorer operation (2001-07-18)

Demonstration ride.
 
Local company arranging various activities for groups contacted me because they had about my hovercraft. Rain has been in the air for two days now and it was only a matter of time when we would have it pouring.
 
Allthough cloudy (and getting even more cloudy minute by minute) weather was actually quite warm and really humid. No breeze at all - all the symptoms of heavy thunder storm.
 
I briefly presented the craft, funtion principle and main figures and limitations. As he was interested in how much noise this unit would create so i took him for a demonstration ride to judge himself. This also gave me an opportunity to make a little test: i rolled duct tape around fuel pump relay holding it tightly in place to see if that prevents from abrubtly stopping engine.
 
I headed downstream from hoverport keeping eye on the weather, since we were no doubt going to have rain that evening. We took it to the bay and i found a suitable place to demonstrate that small rocks are not a problem for hovercraft.
 
I stopped the craft on bay and we discussed some more possibilities and how to proceed. As we were there peacefully floating and discussing i heard distant thunder and decided to leave at once. I don't think i'd like to be floating on a bay with carbon fiber propeller at +3m (10ft) when thunder storm hits the area !
 
As i got speed above hump speed first drops appeared on windshield and in no time it was raining. Luckily this wasn't full blast thunder storm but still enough. We got back safely and as i landed to hoverport rain was again just few occasional drops. Engine didn't stop once with relay taped in socket with duct tape, i guess faulty socket was the cause for that.
 
Just 4km (3miles) and never put in my GPS.
