Explorer operation (2001-06-22)

Later same evening when ligths were installed and functioning, it was time to take some people home upstream.

There were 6 people total onboard as  we headed upstream of the river. It was rather difficult to get the craft above hump speed, but mostly this was because minority of the passengers were in "party mode" and they just could sit calmly were they were seated.

Evening was calm, it was about 9pm, but cloudy day was turning in to sunny evening, just as Midsummer Eve should be.

We soon got to the low bridge and i turned off the engine and one of the passengers turned the prop to "X" position and we slowly got thorough. As were ready to start a boat appeared in front of us and i did't rush it since it was slow boat and river was wide enough to accomodate Explorer not to mention boat and Explorer.

We got above hump speed much quicker now, may be i used more throttle or something but we soon gained the boat and prepared to pass it as they noticed us and actually stopped to wider section of the river. When we were about 20m from them engine suddenly stopped and we were off the cushion rapidly. Embarassing as the boat stopped for us and now we were floating. I knew what the problem was and after moving fuel pump relay a bit we were on our way. This time we got pass the boat and waved them as thanks for letting us pass them. We got to more populated part of the river and people were sitting on their backyards barbaqueing and "possibly" drinking few beers. And surely fuel pump relay failed again and we were floating. Fix was quick but craft had turned sideways and we had to push and pull to get prop away from bushes before starting the engine. Boat we just passed had to stop and wait for us as we blocked the whole river. We started and proceeded at 8km/h on 10km/h limit zone. This stop was a bit more embarassing than the first abrubt stop and i believe boat after us got a share of water spray as we slowly steering in narrow channel. There was another bridge but this one has enough height to carefully duck under at idle. This bridge is by the way a beutiful example of engineering talent (i designed it myself ;-) ).

We got to boat ramp and i decided to do something that boat couldn't do. Instead of unloading people in a boaring boat manner i drove up the ramp and landed on parking lot. Luckily there wasn't too much dust there.

After unloading we headed back to hoverport right away. Boat we passed turned also back and was in front of us again. We took the populated part of the river really slowly in order to let boat go further and possibly to avoid the need of passing it again. Fuel pmp relay worked the whole time now it was rather pleasent ride with only two people onboard. I tested the lights and everything was working. Soon we were closing in on the lower bridge and the boat. Boaters saw us and started to slow but since we were about to stop at the bridbe anyway i signaled them to go on and we followed them this time,
They actually turned away to where they appeared in the first place and
