Explorer operation (2001-03-03)

It was quite a warm weather compared to what we've experienced during last couple of weeks. Sun was shining and it was -3...-5C (23-27F). Wind was getting stronger and stronger, about 7-8m/s (4knts) by the time we took off.

We were just to test if the engine would start in the first place and it did that just fine. We just had got another 5cm (2") of fresh powder snow and i did got my share of it while manouvering Explorer out of hoverport.

There were lot of people on the ice fishing, skiing and just enjoying the sun. We saw few snowmobiles too.

We headed downstream just to take a short tour in closest bay. First we headed to opposite direction of our last route. This is because i found out that hole in the ice we wondered last time was actually what i joked about back then: someone had driven a car between two island where current is strong and ice is thin. You know the rest. Luckily car didn't fall all the way through and there also happened to be a rock underneath on which the car fell. Person driving the car had got lost in the dark a didn't know where he was going. Hmm. I think this person should have stepped out of the car and explore a safe way by foot rather than shooting in the dark by car.
Couple of snowmobiles followed us just between the same islands that people who know this area simply would not go even by foot. I did a 180 just to see that they actually came through and neither of them didn't fell through.

Soon after west wind hit us and allthough it wasn't that strong we couldn't climb straight to headwind it. I thought it's best to turn back and i wasn't wrong. After half a mile or so engine started to loose rpm and i stopped the craft it before engine dies in speed. It idled fine, but would not run.

Just as i thought, we had driven long enough so that whole engine bay was stuffed with powder snow. There was snow on ignition wires, distributor cap, just everywhere. After removing snow and drying the wires engine started right away and run just fine.

We headed back to hoverport. There was an obvious problem that needed fixing before powder snow operations could be done succesfully.

It was a short ride about 3km (1.9miles). Weather was perfect but the craft not. Some mods and additions are needed.
