Explorer operation (2001-01-21)

There was supposed to be quite similar weather as it was yesterday. But sun didn't shine and it was more windy. Temperature was -4C (25F). I still wanted to go hovering and my girlfriend didn't oppose.

We took her uncle with us too. He is a disabled person but just loves to go boating and snowmobile rides when ever there is a chance. He gave us a lecture yesterday when we got back wondering when is his chance to come with us too. Well today it was.

There wasn't much cleaning to do as we had covered the windshield before leaving yesterday. But engine was quite difficult to start. It started to run smoothly just before battery would have been totally toasted. We got on our way.

First stop was to see couple of fishermen that had left there few hours before us and were busy checking nets. Nothing much there when we got there just a one trout, but as we were leaving they got few big whitefish so it wasn't totally wasted time.

We headed again to southeast to the bridge where we were yesterday. Not as many people on ice today than day before. It had been cold enough during the night that there wasn't open water under the bridge anymore. This time i took the craft under the bridge at the same speed 40km/h (24,9mph) i was doing up there. Yesterday we turned to south right after the bridge but today we continued southeast crossing a small bay and taking course more to east. Now we were at bay i used to spend part of my summers sailing and rowing during different scout camps. It sure looked much bigger then. We passed familiar places; i could remember the exact place where i lost an expensive lure fifteen years ago. We continued to the end of bay where small river starts. It is a small river, more like ditch and i wouldn't want to go any further so that we wouldn't get stuck. Soon it would have gotten impossible to turn the craft because it would have gotten so narrow.

I started to feel the cold weather and wind in my face, but now we had tail wind for more than ten kilometers (6.2miles). I just had to take a detour to check one place where i used to go fishing with my uncle some 20years back. This was also a way smaller than i remembered, but i guess that's just natural.

I tried to sit and drive, but time to time i had to raise my head above the windshield just to see better. There are so many fishnets out there that you really have to careful not to ram over those twigs holding them floating beneath the ice.

My girlfriend suggested that we go and see her grandmother as it would be a quite small addition to our trip. I ordered my passengers to sit in the back seat while we got through 200meter (650ft) of narrow river to her beach sauna. Once we got in we could warm our toes and fingers. She cooked tea for us and we stayed there a while. We couldn't afford to stay too long, few more minutes and we would have been to tired and comfortable to continue.

Just when we got back to the craft we got a phone call to cell phone. Tapio, my father-in-law was ready to go home and wanted to check if we had problems because he couldn't hear the sound anywhere. We told where we were and that we were also getting back.

We got back rather quickly. I still wanted to go out for more, but i couldn't get anyone to come with me, so i had to pack up things too. While we were driving back in our car i noticed my uncle and went straight away to ask him if he is interested for a ride. He helped me a bit while building the craft and this would have been a great opportunity to return that favour. He was interested, but he had something already scheduled and we agreed to do it later. I did show him footage we had taped on Saturday and few weeks back. He was wondering about brakes in hovercraft...
Despite of the weather 31,5km (19,6miles) at average speed of 31,5km/h (~20mph).
