Tip: view clip in double size resolution should still be good enough.

Plan was really to spend some time out hovering today and that's exactly what we did. Couple of time actually with different crew. Weather was cloudy as you can see from pics and videos, but practically no wind and temperature around 0C (32F).

We started with four people onboard. Again i tried to start slowly, but some gliding bank to bank occurred anyway. Not as much as last time though so i had learned some. We started by taking the route we had problems in turning last time.

First objective for this cruise was to wipe down sea vegetation to make certain area of bay freeze more to create safe snowmobile track for larger payload. Frozen straws were easy to wipe down with Explorer and in no time we were done.  Now all is needed is first some water and then -20C (-4F) and we have a trail.

After this we just had fun and demonstrated transition ice-water-ice to our quest who is a commercial fisher. We gained a top speed of 49,1km/h (30,5mph) not that this was absolute top for the craft, but highest i dared to do. It would have been too risky to drive any faster as everything has to be planned way ahead. I practiced stopping the craft by swapping ends and after doing 180's and 360's numerous times i think i'm now ready to go for the speed record for this particular craft. I left  my crew on small island with camera and did a little tour by myself to shoot some material for the web page. We headed back to hoverport and this time everything went smoothly. Practicing those 180's and 360's gave more confidence to driving and all the time it seems more simple to operate even in tighter spots and situations. Landing to hoverport was perfect, second time in row. But still i wonder how Barry Palmer did it when he made that transition from river to his back porch for the first time. I bet he must have had his share of "that was close" 's when practicing that maneuver! Statement at end of Sevtec Scout video "Inexperienced driver should not operate in such terrain" is not underestimated.

I took tripod onboard and after some waiting second crew turned up and we were off. This time three persons onboard: me, my brother and father. Basically what we did was the same thing as with first crew. There seems to be lot of fishermen around even though ice is not that strong yet and Explorer seems to crack the ice severely at certain speed. So i tried to stay within trails i already left there just not to give too many surprises to these fishermen. At some point we topped 51,9 at GPS, but only one direction. Did more 180's and 360's and of course left my brother to small island to shoot some footage. This time with tripod for more steady clip. On our way back we went to see the snowmobile trail and made it little bit longer and wider as we were there. One of the clips is "incar" camera footage when we are getting back to hoverport from that detour. Third perfect landing in row. Wonder if i were able to do it without all the snow and ice smoothing the way ?
Total of 22,4km (13,9miles) was recorded by GPS today. All of that was mostly spinning around in limited area.

Clip #14 - 360's Versions:
Practicing 360's and just having fun. No sound in this clip! No tripod.

Clip #15 - Fun over for now Versions:
Practicing 360's and doing a close passing for the camera before ending this hovering session. No sound in this clip! No tripod.

Clip #16 - 2nd trip starting Versions:
Ice-water-ice transitions
  • Real Player Stream

Clip #17 - 2nd trip leaving Versions:
That zoom really eats up the distances. What seems to be quite close is actually quite far away.

Clip #18 - Incar camera Versions:
We are heading back to hoverport. Notice ice has cracked after running on it for two days around freezing point temperatures.
In this clip you can see the "that was close" trail.
