Carb change

After thinking few options about long lasting carb issues, i decided to try the carb form older EA-71 i had originally in my craft.

Long term plan is to use DIY standalone EFI system called MegaSquirt, but since hardware changes are required for this, i need to save that for later. I have assembled several boards for sale and will be running one in atleast one of my cars later. But i need to modify intake manifold for injectors and that has to wait until i get the craft to more convevient location. I recently purchase AC/DC TIG welder so modifying intake manifold to suit my needs won't be a problems after i'm familiar with AC TIG operation. DC seems to be very easy from the beginning. More about this later.

Swapping carbs was pretty much straight forward job. Basic structure is same in both and i already had the choke cable in the craft. I had to plug some vacuum lines, since newer carb (and engine) seem to have lot of those compared to carb from older engine. Before carb was installed, it was cleaned and assembled with new gasket kit. Also some of the coolant had to drained out since carb is kept warm by coolant in intake manifold.

With new (old) carb in place engine started easily, but i couldn't take idle rpms down. So had to adjust cable length and lever ratios. After that idle was smooth and low compared to prevois carb. Other thing i noticed very soon was the throttle response - it was now immediate as it should be. I tested the craft on land with bow ports open. This way i could give it almost full throttle without moving too much. Everything seemed to work so we checked everything before hitting water.

I took the craft to short test drive upriver and then round some close by islands. Engine feels much stronger now and seemsto run smoother through rpms. Also there seems to be 100-200rpm more at the top end, but could be just jumpy tacho needle. Now i can atleast drive the craft to location where it can be put to trailer and taken to hull repairs.
