"The smudge"

So we had a little mess in our hands. Gray smudge covered the engine bay. Removing the engine cover revealed that gray smudge had found it's way simply to everywhere and i do mean everywhere.

I checked the oil level it seemed to be OK. Coolant system i didn't check at this time because engine was still warm.
We started to clean up the mess. Luckily we had a huge bale of cotton waste to use and most of the smudge seemed to be on the craft and not on the water. We also started to think where did this came from and best we could come up with was the open breather tube on valve covers. However this didn't explain why inside of the engine cover was also messy. Worst fear we had was that coolant was mixing with engine oil, but at this time oil seemed to be OK. So it was diagnosed that more oil in the engine and revving engine at it's max caused oil to burst out from the open breather tubes.

We drained the oil system and immediately saw that there was coolant there. Time to remove valve covers and there it was: one of the water had popped off and caused oil and coolant to mix.
It really was a mess. I had my camera with me but taking pictures wasn't first thing in my mind at that moment. By this time engine was cooled down and i checked the cooling system - almost empty.
Coolant had leaked into oil system causing oil level to raise and excess "liquid" to be bursted out through breather tubes

After recovering from the initial shock we started to recover the engine also. We poured in some fresh oil and run the engine for a minute or so and drained the system. Repeated this couple of times and removed also oil filter and replaced it with new one.

Engine problems continue and i'm loosing my faith to this particular engine. It's possible that it suffered severe damage running without coolant and yet working hard, but don't know that yet. I'm not going to open it this time, just tap in new plug and run it.
Writing this we still don't know what caused the plug to loose: Crack in the block, overheating, loose plug, pressure in the cooling system ? This has to be studied in order to avoid this for second time.

Oh well Wednesday 6th of December is independence day in Finland and therefore holiday, so i guess i'll be spending most of it at the hoverport fixing my Explorer...
